The summer trend: Cold Brew coffee. In addition to ice coffee (also known as Ice Brew), Cold Brew is a refreshing method of coffee preparation for hot days. Cold Brew is prepared with cold water and an extraction time of at least twelve hours. We will show you how it is made!

The name already reveals it: Cold Brew is not brewed with hot water as we know it from filter coffee, but extracted over several hours in cold water. It contains about 70 % less acids and bitter substances than coffee brewed with hot water and tastes really fruity and refreshing.

Cold Brew instructions

  • Grind 100 g coffee coarsely and mix it with 1 l water, then stir well.
  • Cover your pot and leave the coffee in the fridge for at least 12 hours.
  • Filter the cold-extracted coffee.
  • Enjoy the finished Cold Brew pure or pimp it with fruit juices!

To spice up Cold Brew with e.g. lemon sorbet or to prepare cocktails with it, we recommend making a Cold Brew concentrate. Simply double the amount of coffee and then dilute the concentrate to drinking strength.

The detailed instructions

1For Cold Brew coffee you need 100 g coffee and 1 l cold water. We recommend a coarse grind. ☝️ You want to pimp your Cold Brew with juices and co. later? For this purpose we recommend making a cold brew concentrate and using 200 g of coffee to 1 l of water.

2Pour the ground coffee into the sieve of your Cold Brew Maker and fill it up with 1 l water, stirring well if possible. Make sure that the coffee powder is completely covered.

3Seal your brewer and leave the coffee in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours. Then you can remove the sieve with the coffee powder.

Hario Mizudashi Cold Brew Maker

4You can enjoy your finished Cold Brew with its intense fruity taste purely or spice it up with, for example, fruit juices and ice cubes. As always, the tasting is a matter of study. Have fun!

Tip: If you don’t have a cold brew maker at hand, you can use a different container. Cover it in the fridge with cling film and filter the cold-extracted cold brew with a normal hand filter, such as the Hario V60 or the Chemex.
