Radiant Unity

Like a plate of orange biscuits that brings a festive atmosphere on cold days: Turihamwe combines the sweetness of cane sugar with fresh orange to create a distinctive and delicately spiced espresso. Seven female coffee farmers from Burundi have pooled their ideas to create this comforting, warm Arabica, perfect for cosy festive moments.

Seven Women, a Shared Heritage

Our Turihamwe winter espresso comes from the province of Ngozi in northern Burundi, a country in East Africa that relies heavily on coffee for its livelihood. Here, seven female coffee farmers grow their cherries at an altitude of 1,750 metres. At this altitude, the coffee cherries ripen more slowly, developing a distinctive sweetness as a result. Instead of handing over their harvest to an external washing station, as most producers do, the women coffee farmers joined forces in 2019 and decided to take control of their coffee production themselves. This project demonstrates what can be achieved when people invest together and shape their own coffee journey.

Outstanding Quality Starts with the Processing

Together, the Turihamwe women producers have invested in their own wet mill and built the country’s first washing station. The seven women farmers can process their coffee cherries there themselves, thereby directly influencing the quality of their coffee. Today, this process yields five micro-lots – with the aim of gradually expanding their own production.

Tips for Preparation

Turihamwe works particularly well in a portafilter and in a fully automatic coffee machine. When brewed as an espresso, its orange and spicy notes really come to the fore. In a cappuccino or flat white, it takes on a smoother flavour, reminiscent of orange zest and brown sugar – the perfect garnish to gingerbread and stollen.

Spicy, sweet and wonderfully warming: Turihamwe is an espresso with character, demonstrating just how vibrant yet cosy a coffee from Burundi can taste.

Turihamwe Turashobora

In Kirundi, Turihamwe means "together". The name encapsulates the idea behind the project: seven women from Burundi are pooling their resources, making joint decisions and, step by step, expanding their own coffee production. The women farmers are organised into their small investment group, Turihamwe Turashobora. Their plan is clear: using the premiums from the coming years, they aim to expand their production to 1,200 sacks per year – thereby proving, day after day, just how important solidarity is.
