What Makes Abaca Paper Filters so Special?

These filters are made from abaca (Manila hemp), which gives them their name. This plant-based fiber is extremely tear-resistant, highly permeable to liquids, and naturally flavor-neutral.

In addition, Abaca paper filters are distinguished by their two-sided crepe structure (“Two-Side Crepe”). This is achieved through the so-called “Air-Through-Dry” process: Instead of being pressed under pressure through hot rollers as is customary, the wet paper is gently dried with hot air. As a result, the paper structure isn’t crushed or stretched on one side; instead, the fiber fabric remains voluminous and intact on both sides.

What makes it special: The combination of the highly porous abaca fiber and the two-sided crepe structure not only ensures high stability but also significantly influences how your coffee flows through the filter.

Even Water Flow

Many filter papers fit tightly against the inner wall of the dripper. This can slow down the water flow – the water pools, and the extraction becomes uneven. The textured surface of the Abaca filters creates a fine air gap between the filter paper and the dripper. The water can flow evenly and finds its way through the coffee bed without any hesitation.

Clear Flavors in Every Cup

Since the abaca material does not impart any paper taste to the brewed coffee, the coffee’s flavor profile remains completely unaltered. At the same time, the paper’s deep texture very efficiently traps fine coffee particles (fines) before they reach the cup or clog the filter. The constant water flow enables uniform extraction.

The result: a particularly clean cup of coffee in which the flavors come into their own – without any distracting aftertaste.

The double-sided crepe texture of the Abaca filters ensures an even flow of water and balanced extraction. At the same time, the filter paper reliably traps fine coffee particles—resulting in a clear cup of coffee that lets the flavors shine through.
