What Makes Chemex Paper Filters so Special?

Chemex filters are 20–30% heavier and thicker than conventional paper filters. The special, fine-pored paper traps more suspended particles and prevents oils and fats—which occur naturally in coffee and are extracted during brewing—from entering your coffee. As a result, coffee brewed in a Chemex tastes particularly aromatic, clean, and not bitter. Often, the coffee’s natural sweetness even comes through. It’s no wonder we consider the Chemex to be in a category of its own!

Available in Two Sizes

The filters are available in two different sizes, each optimized to fit the specific size of the Chemex carafe. The small coffee filters are designed exclusively for Chemex carafes that hold 1–3 cups. These are crescent-shaped and must be folded before use. The large coffee filters are suitable for Chemex carafes that hold 6, 8, and 10 cups of coffee. The large filters come pre-folded and are available in round and square shapes.

Folding instructions for Small Chemex Filters (1-3 cups)

First, fold the filter in half so that the rounded edges overlap and a 90° angle is formed. Repeat this process and fold the paper a second time lengthwise in the middle. Fold in the flap that forms at the top. Now the filter can be opened into a pointed cylinder and used in the small Chemex carafe. Ideally, you should place the filter paper in the direction of the spout.
